Lewis' father died at a very young age and there were not schools in the area of Georgia where his family was living. Due to this reason, Lewis learned to hunt, fish, and search the woods. He was also very interested in plants and the outdoors. Lewis later joined the Army and put to use the skills he learned growing up as a young boy.
